Alexandria Venture Investments leads venture investors in medical, health and life science sectors

New York-based Alexandria Venture Investments is the most active venture investor in the medical, health and life sciences sector in 2018 to date, with 25 deals according to preliminary data from Thomson Reuters.

The firm, founded in 1996 as the strategic venture arm of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, launched a seed-stage investment platform in January 2018 to invest in life science startups.

Most recently, Alexandria Venture Investments has backed San Diego-based Epic Sciences Inc, a developer of solutions to personalize and advance cancer treatment and management. Other portfolio companies include Benson Hill Biosystems, Metacrine and Skyhawk Therapeutics, among others.

New Enterprise Associates, which makes biotech, consumer, energy, healthcare, and pharmaceutical device investments across all stages, has made 21 investments in the healthcare sector, according to Thomson Reuters.

Chicago-based Arch Venture Partners and Rocky Hill, Connecticut-based Connecticut Innovations each have made 18 investments in the sector.
