George Carmany To Advise Essex Woodlands

George Carmany, a former Bankers Trust and American Express executive, has joined Essex Woodlands Health Ventures as a senior advisor.


Essex Woodlands Health Ventures (, a leading venture capital/growth equity firm dedicated to health care investing, announces the appointment of George W. Carmany, III as a Senior Advisor. Having expanded capital under management to $2.5 billion, Essex Woodlands continues to expand its elite management team with the addition of Mr. Carmany.

Mr. Carmany began his business career with Bankers Trust Company in its International Banking Department, working in New York, followed by four years in Sydney, Australia as the Executive Director of its merchant banking subsidiary. His career at American Express spans nearly two decades, from 1975 when he held senior positions at the corporate level and in its international banking division, including Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategic Planning and Senior Executive Vice President, to his leadership as Principal Administrative Officer of American Express’ investment management and private banking subsidiary, The Boston Company, until the sale of the company to Mellon Financial Corporation in 1993. His experience extends to virtually every aspect of the investment banking and biotech industry including the formation of G.W. Carmany and Company, an advisory business in financial services and life sciences. 

Mr. Carmany is a Director of the Macquarie Infrastructure Company. He also served internationally as Director of Sun Life Financial in Toronto, Canada, is Senior Advisor to EnGeneIC Pty. Ltd., a biotechnology company in Sydney, Australia, and is a Senior Advisor to Brown Brothers Harriman and Company, and The Asia Link Group of Beijing, PRC. He served as CEO and Chairman of Helicon Therapeutics, a biotechnology company founded by the Cold Spring Laboratory, Roche Pharmaceuticals and OSI Pharmaceuticals, until 2005. Mr. Carmany is the past Chairman of The New England Medical Center; a Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of Bentley University; a member of the Executive Committee of the Alumni Council of Amherst College; and past Chairman of the Board of Associates of The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research.
