Mayfield Elevates Vasan to General Partner –

MENLO PARK, Calif. – Mayfield Fund, an investor in early-stage information technology and health-care companies, in January promoted Venture Partner Robin Vasan to general partner.

Vasan was elevated to his new position because of his talent in identifying investment opportunities, his leadership qualities and his ability to interact well with colleagues, said Grant Heidrich, a general partner at the firm. He will continue to focus on business-to-business e-commerce companies, especially those geared toward infrastructure building.

Vasan sits on the boards of three portfolio companies, including webMethods Inc., a B2B e-commerce company registered to go public, Riverbed Technologies, a software company for hand-held devices and a third deal that had yet to be announced at press time. Although his new title will result in assuming more board seats, his main responsibilities – selecting portfolio companies, sourcing and closing deals and actively helping companies through various stages of financing – will not change dramatically, he said.

Prior to joining Mayfield in 1998, Vasan was a founder or key player in three client-server software startups: C-ATS Software Inc., Infinity Financial Technology and Risk Management Solutions Inc.

Mayfield currently is investing its $450 million Mayfield X, which closed in June 1999 and is expected to back about 45 companies with average investments of between $8 million and $10 million, Heidrich said. General Partners Allen Morgan, Kevin Fong and Heidrich also work in the business-to-business e-commerce space.

Mayfield has plans to raise an eleventh fund, but no details were available at press time.
