Nistica Raises $6.5 Million

Nistica Inc., a Bridgewater, N.J.-based maker of optical modules for the delivery of high-bandwidth applications, has raised $6.5 million in Series C funding. Battelle Ventures led the round, and was joined by fellow return backers Novitas Capital, Technology Venture Partners and Fujikura. NTT Electronics Corp. came aboard as a new investor. Nistica previously raised around $17 million.

In an ongoing effort to redefine the far reaches of the optical network, Nistica announced $6.5-million in Series C funding today. Battelle Ventures led the round, with institutional investors Novitas Capital and Technology Venture Partners, and strategic partner Fujikura participating. One notable addition to the investor syndicate is NTT Electronics Corporation (NEL), a member of the NTT Group of Companies.

NEL President & CEO, Hiroshi Yoshimura, remarked, “We are seeing a huge growth in FTTH deployments and a surge in broadband demands across the world. This growth will translate into the need for low-cost agile devices closer to the edge of the optical networks. As a strategic investor, NEL will team up with Fujikura, Nistica’s manufacturing partner, to help facilitate new solutions for Japan and other targeted markets.”

With Telcordia certification completed on its FULL FLEDGE series of wavelength selective switches (WSS), the infusion of Series C funding enables Nistica to introduce new solutions that enable the creation of colorless, directionless networks unconstrained by grids. As part of its expanding portfolio, Nistica also announced today the availability of WSS modules capable of switching up to 176 channels separated by 25GHz; these modules are grid-flexible up to 200GHz channel spacing to help future-proof carrier networks for ultrahigh bit-rate transmission.

“We have been working with the Nistica team for over three years and we are delighted to expand this relationship,” added Noboru Sugiyama, Managing Executive Officer of Fujikura Limited. “The combination of Nistica’s optical innovations and Fujikura’s disciplined manufacturing process has enabled us to capture a significant share of the 1×2 WSS market. The addition of NTT Electronics to this partnership further strengthens our position in global markets.”

“With the backing of strong partners, Nistica has been able to further solidify the robustness of our supply chain,” remarked Ashish Vengsarkar, CEO of Nistica. “We have garnered the trust of an impressive set of customers by providing them with the key optical features in their offerings.”

The Nistica team will be present in San Diego from March 22 – March 26, 2010, attending OFC 2010.
