In Australia, a man dumped 5 million gallons of raw sewage into the nation’s clean drinking water supply. He didn’t do it with a dump truck. He did it with the flick of a switch and the push of a button. He did it at the control layer of the network set up to monitor the system. It was a beautiful piece of work for a solo hacker. It also was a warning sign that mission critical infrastructures like water systems and electricity grids need not be the targets of bombs or poisons. Cyber-terrorist attacks can prove just as devastating, if not more so.
