Top 10: deal count and equity fall in software sector in April compared to year before

April saw an overall decrease in deal count and increase in equity invested compared to the same month in 2018, but the data was mixed for the month’s five biggest investment sectors.

Across all sectors, there were 324 venture deals with U.S.-based companies in April 2018, compared with 341 the same month a year before, while total disclosed equity invested amounted to $5.4 billion, compared with $4.4 billion, according to preliminary data from Thomson Reuters.

But in the computer software sector, which amounted for nearly a third of all deals in April, deal count and equity invested fell compared to the same month the year before. There were 105 venture deals with U.S.-based companies in the software sector, and $1.4 billion invested, down from 119 billion and $2.5 billion the same month a year before.

The sector’s biggest deal was health enterprise SaaS company Welltok, which raised $75.6 million from investors, including Bessemer Venture Partners, Georgian Partners, New Enterprise Associates and Future Fund.

In comparison, the ecommerce sector saw both deal count and equity rise, with 41 deals and $754.8 million raised compared to 25 deals in April 2017 and $233.4 million raised. The sector’s biggest deal was grocery delivery platform Instacart, which raised $154.1 million from investors, including Coatue Management and Glade Brook Capital.

In the internet content sector, which saw the third-greatest number of deals in April, deal count held steady compared to the same month the year before at 26, while equity increased from $171.4 million to $406 million. The sector’s largest deal was automated background check software Checkr, which raised $100 million from investors, including Accel Partners, T. Rowe Price Threshold Partnerships and Y Combinator.

The human biotech sector saw a drop in deals and an increase in equity, with 17 deals and $576 million invested compared to 29 deals and $486.5 million invested in April 2017. The sector’s largest investment was Constellation Pharmaceuticals, which raised $100 million from the Column Group, OrbiMed Advisors, SR One, Third Rock Ventures, Topspin Partners, the California University of Law & Business, Venrock, Hillhouse Capital Management, Bessemer and Casdin Capital.

Likewise, the medical therapeutics sector saw a drop in deals and increase in equity, with 10 deals and $116.8 million invested in April 2018 compared to 15 deals and $115.1 million invested the year before. The sector’s biggest dea was Axonics Modulation Technologies, which raised $40.6 million from Gilde Healthcare Partners and Longitude Capital Management.

The biggest venture investment across all sectors in April 2018 was aerospace manufacturer SpaceX, which raised $214 million from undisclosed investors.
