United Ventures backs Italian gaming startup BadSeed

Italy-based gaming startup BadSeed has received 250,000 euros in funding. The investor was United Ventures.

London, 17 July – BadSeed, an innovative gaming startup which specialises in fun, high quality mobile games, today announced €250,000 of early stage investment from United Ventures, the European technology-focused venture capital firm. The funding signals the first stage of a long-term relationship between the two companies with a larger investment anticipated in the near future.

Founded in Italy during early 2012, BadSeed is driven by a core of experienced game industry veterans who together worked on big console titles at Ubisoft. After a few years at the studios, Jacopo Musso, Roberto Mangiafico and Clara Parona decided to leave and build up their own talented team of developers, designers and artists.

Their intention was to bring the quality of console games to mobile and change the way users play the most popular gaming genres – creating enriching, meaningful and unique game experiences that touch and inspire players with brand new gameplay mechanics and innovative graphics.

BadSeed’s story so far has quickly achieved international status – in late 2012 the team moved to Estonia having been selected for GameFounders, the first European accelerator program for gaming startups and in 2013 they were selected by Mind The Bridge as one of the most innovative Italian startups of the year. After three months in Silicon Valley they closed a worldwide deal with mobile publishing giant PocketGems for the their first title “Sheep Up!”

Both Google and Blackberry featured Sheep Up! for a week after it’s launch and the game has so far received close to one million downloads.
United Ventures’ funding will be used for the global launch of BadSeed’s second game “Sleep Attack” and for the development of a third title, based on a new concept that will showcase a previously unseen game experience later in 2014.

Jacopo Musso, CEO at BadSeed said, “With so many puzzle games on the market, we really wanted to amp up the gameplay with Sheep Up!, providing an innovative set of controls and puzzle elements that kept players guessing. Our mission is NOT to make games following the trend of the moment, clones riding the wake of a winning product. Our goal is to build a solid long-lasting creative industry. We’re delighted to have secured first round funding from United Ventures for the next stage of our development.

Sergio Zocchi, United Ventures’ Managing Partner, said: We were very impressed by the creative talent of the BadSeed team and their ability to make the difference in terms of unique design concepts, original game experiences and stunning graphics. We’re excited to assist the team’s journey and are looking forward to helping them move the gaming industry
