The Menlo Park firm, formerly known as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, noted the passing of Caufield and credited him with helping it “hone its approach to investing in entrepreneurs who were building innovative technology and life sciences companies.”

He is survived by his son, Frank R. Caufield, who is founder and managing partner of Darwin Ventures, and his daughter Kristen Caufield.
