LOS ANGELES, CA–– Overnight, the new mobile-first travel app connecting last-minute travelers with local hosts who have space for same-day stays, today announces the close of its $2.5 million Seed round, led by Accomplice and CrossCut Ventures. Additional strategic investors include Paul Bricault (Greycroft/Amplify) and Elliott Bisnow (Summit Action Fund). The funding round also marks the company’s official launch out of beta in Los Angeles, California and subsequent expansion to Austin, Texas.

Since its initial conceptualization in late 2015 by Asher Hunt, Artia Moghbel, and Ethan Kravitz, Overnight has connected over 750 last-minute travelers with local hosts for same-day stays. To date, Overnight has accumulated hundreds of hosts in the Los Angeles area who are currently receiving requests and is looking forward to bringing the marketplace to the burgeoning tech and travel hub that is Austin, ahead of SXSW.

The Overnight Marketplace not only allows lovers of travel and adventure with new accommodation options not available on conventional booking websites, but it facilitates last-minute bookings for spontaneous travelers, who weren’t able or prefer not to plan ahead.

“We’re spending every ounce of our energy solving the problem of same-day stays. We think if we can nail it, we create a step-function change in the frequency in which people travel, and also host” said Overnight cofounder and CEO, Asher Hunt. “I’m extremely excited to be building Overnight alongside world-class co-founders, community-builders, engineers, and investors. And we are very proud to be building this in Los Angeles.”

Overnight makes travel seamless, straight-forward, and simple. Here’s how it works:

  1. Choose an area – Drop a pin and set a radius, or discover featured locations.
  2. Request a place to stay – Broadcast a request that will be pushed to hosts in the selected area. Requests should be thoughtful and detailed so hosts know what to expect.
  3. Hosts respond, then listings are pushed to traveler – Hosts quickly review your profile and your request, then respond by saying “Yes, my place is available” or by privately declining. If made available, a traveler will be notified and can see/book their place.
  4. Book quickly, rest easy – Travelers pay directly through the app within seconds of a response. Moving quickly is important to ensure that traveler is able to book with that host before someone else does.

“Accomplice is excited to partner with Asher and the Overnight team to build on their successes in the on-demand market and help them reinforce their leadership in the space,” noted Dustin Dolginow of Accomplice.

The safety and trust of the Overnight community is the company’s top priority. Both travelers and hosts must authenticate via Facebook, verify their phone number, provide a valid credit card and are encouraged to add their government-issued identification. Travelers pay securely through the app when they book a listing. Hosts and travelers also rate each other at the end of a stay, so Overnight can continue upholding its high community standards.

One of the key differences with this marketplace, beyond the speed and efficiency of booking, is the way in which hosts and travelers are matched. Hosts list their space but accommodations are not publicly searchable and are pushed to the traveler only after their request is approved. On the other side, travelers only see places they know are available tonight, and ready to book. The same-day nature of the app also means that hosts do not need to manage a calendar of guests and inevitably tie up their future plans. Overnight’s focus is on fostering the best overall experience for both hosts and travelers – promoting spontaneous travel, spontaneous hosting, and the exploration of exciting new locales to build local and global perspective.
