SAN FRANCISCO – Keith Benjamin, a former senior Internet analyst for BancBoston Robertson Stephens, recently joined Highland Capital Partners as a general partner.
Benjamin will remain in San Francisco, thereby becoming the Boston-based firm’s first full-time employee to work in the Bay Area. Highland plans to hire additional investment professionals and a support staff to join Benjamin.
Benjamin will continue to write for and manage Internetstocks.com, an Internet investment research Web site backed by BancBoston Robertson Stephens. Highland and BancBoston Robertson Stephens are forging a marketing relationship to further promote the Web property.
“I think it’s appropriate for me to continue to have an on-line writing vehicle to keep in touch with important trends in the public market,” Benjamin said. “The skills I bring as an investment analyst will transfer over to my investment decisions.”
At BancBoston Robertson Stephens, Benjamin tracked several Highland portfolio companies, including publicly traded Ask Jeeves Inc. He said he expects to devote more attention to companies involved in the business-to-business e-commerce space.
“There is a natural progression in both the private and public markets to put more resources in B-to-B,” he said. “That being said, I don’t think anybody has or expects me to have a strict investment strategy. The Internet is still too young.”
Prior to joining BancBoston Robertson Stephens, Benjamin served as an entertainment and gaming analyst for Ladenburg Thalmann and conducted investment research for Silberberg Rosenthal & Co.
“We were impressed with his professional knowledge of the Internet and his personal side,” said Highland Managing General Partner Dan Nova.
