Portfolio Profiles – EnerTech Capital Partners –

WAYNE, Pa. – EnerTech Capital Partners L.P. invests in a broad range of utility companies, including electricity, water, natural gas, telephony, Internet access and wireless and broadband communications.

EnerTech Capital was formed in 1996 by Mark DeNino, managing director of TL Ventures, and Scott Ungerer, former president and chief executive officer of Atlantic Energy Enterprises, to take advantage of the opportunities that arose following the deregulation of the utilities industry in 1996.

Deregulation broadened the definition and opened the doors for competition in utility services, said Managing Director David Lincoln.

As a result, EnerTech must categorize its portfolio companies into three areas: business systems information technology, new information technology services for the utilities market; customer premise products, new products and services for consumer’s home use; and services and asset utilization and efficiency, new products that improve existing utility services and facilities.

EnerTech Capital Partners L.P. closed in August 1996 at $50 million and is 95% committed. The fund’s limited partners include TL Ventures and Safeguard Scientifics Inc. The firm, which prefers to invest between $2 million and $4 million per company, plans to raise a new vehicle shortly.

Samuel Skinner and John Higley are veteran members of EnerTech’s advisory board, which recently added Patricia Eckert, Wayne Greenburg, Leonard Hyman, Jerry Johnson and Charles McElroy to its ranks (VCJ, June, page 35).

Mr. Ungerer also is a managing director at the firm.
