Georgia Institute of Technology
Incubator: Georgia Tech Venture Lab
Structure: Part of the university’s Office of Economic Development and Technology Ventures. Operates as a pure incubator completely owned and operated by the university.
Portfolio companies: GTronix, a developer of analog semiconductor technology, raised $3.25 million from Menlo Ventures; Jacket Micro Devices, which develops RF Passive Components used in wireless communication products raised, $2.5 million in first round funding from Noro-Moseley Partners, Sevin Rosen Funds, Imlay Investments, the ATDC Seed Capital Fund and Atlanta Technology Angels.
Incubator: Technology Innovation Center of Northwestern University
Structure: Collaboration between the university and the City of Evanston, Ill.
Portfolio companies: Peapod (Nasdaq: PPOD), raised $17.25 million from Ameritech Development Corp., CIBC Wood Gundry Capital, Desai Capital Management, Eos Partners, Glenbrook Partners, Montreux Equity Partners, Travelers and Tribune Ventures; Surgical Insights, which developed an orthopedic surgery procedure and was acquired by General Electric Medical Systems.
Incubator: Purdue Gateways Program
Structure: A network of entities under the auspices of the Purdue Research Foundation: Gateways, Purdue Research Park and the Office of Technology Commercialization.
Portfolio companies: Endocyte, a cancer and immune disease drug developer that has raised $47 million since 2001 from Burrill & Co., CID Equity Partners, Sanderling Ventures and Triathlon Medical Ventures; Arxan Technologies, developer of software protection products that raised more than $12 million from EDF Ventures, Paladin Capital Management, Solstice Capital and Trident Capital.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Incubator: Rensselaer New Ventures Incubator Program
Structure: University owned and operated incubator with some grant funding from New York State. It is a department within the university’s Office of Intellectual Property, Technology Commercialization and New Ventures.
Portfolio companies: Applied BioPhysics, a Troy, N.Y.-based developer of devices for cell research; Lectrocarb Pharmaceuticals, a Watervliet, N.Y.-based biopharmaceutical developer of protein-based drugs.
