Slideshow: Spotify and Other Top European Deals in 2011

Not long before the U.K.-based digital music service provider Spotify released its services in the United States earlier this month, it raised $100 million from Accel Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Digital Sky Technologies.

The deal, reportedly valuing the company at over $1 billion, is not a bad chunk of change for an early stage European tech startup. However, it pales in comparison to a number of U.S.-based tech companies in 2011 that have raised rounds in excess of $100 million, such as Airbnb, Square, AliphCom, Tabula and Cameron Health, among others.

But how does Spotify’s recent round rate alongside other European startups?

I delved into the database of Thomson Reuters (publisher of this blog) to find the top 10 early stage rounds so far this year from tech companies Across the Pond, which for this post, includes greater Europe and Russia. One interesting takeaway is how many U.S. firms are involved in the deals (which is related to a story idea we’re working on in Venture Capital Journal).

Also noteworthy is how one U.S.-based firm is in three of the top 10 deals. Hint: it’s a Silicon Valley-based VC firm that starts with the letter “A.”

Note: All figures are in U.S. dollars.
