Slideshow: UTIMCO Holds 7 Austin Ventures Funds, 4 of Which Have Negative IRRs

UTIMCO’s Austin, Texas, headquarters is only a short walk from the offices of Austin Ventures. It should come as no surprise, then, that the two organizations know one another. And know one another they do.

UTIMCO has invested a total of $103 million in seven Austin Ventures funds, its second largest VC holding after Morgenthaler Ventures, according to data released to peHUB. (Click this link for a slideshow of IRRs for Morgenthaler funds backed by UTIMCO.)

The Austin Ventures funds date from 1994 to 2008 and have generated a broad range of returns — from an IRR of 73.14% for the 1994 vintage Austin Ventures IV to the negative IRRs of funds launched in 1998 and 1999.

What follows is a slideshow of the individual funds with their capital commitments and corresponding IRRs.

By way of background, Austin Ventures has been in the venture business since 1979 and has $3.9 billion under management, according to Thomson Reuters (publisher of this blog). The firm has raised 14 funds over the years, with a strong focus on Internet, software, communications and semiconductor investments.

UTIMCO, or the University of Texas Investment Management Co., manages $23 billion in assets for the University of Texas and Texas A&M school systems and had 56 active venture funds in its portfolio as of February 2011, the most recent data UTIMCO made available.
