Year in Review: NEA ranks as most active investor in 2017

New Enterprise Associates made the most venture deals for the second year in a row in 2017, with 125 investments totaling $914 million, according to VCJ’s analysis of preliminary Thomson Reuters data through mid-December. That means NEA invested in 2 1/2 companies a week on average.

Sequoia Capital followed, with 81 deals totaling more than $1.9 billion, and Accel Partners came in third with 80 deals totaling $721.2 million. Greycroft Partners, which made 76 investments, and Matrix Partners, which made 74, rounded out the top five firms.

Out of the top 10 most active venture firms in 2017, six are located in Menlo Park, Palo Alto or Mountain View, California.

NEA, which earlier this year raised $3.3 billion in commitments for its 16th fund, which invests in IT and healthcare deals, from seed stage to growth. Among its deals, it backed Databricks, an analytics-platform provider that raised $140 million in Series D funding from NEA and others; Pionyr Immunotherapeutics, a developer of antibody therapeutics that raised $62 million in a Series B round led by NEA; and, a developer of a cloud-based data privacy and protection platform that raised $3.1 million in seed financing.

NEA also led venture firms by number of deals in 2016, with 95 investments reported totaling $522.38 million, according to Thomson Reuters. Of the 10most active venture firms that year, six were located in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In 2015, Sequoia Capital made the most venture deals, with 180 investments totaling $2.15 billion. That year, eight of the most active venture firms were located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
