Angel-backed Spartan Bioscience secures strategic investment from Canon

Spartan Bioscience Inc, an Ottawa-based provider of on-demand DNA testing technology, has received an undisclosed strategic investment from Canon USA Inc, a subsidiary of Japan’s Canon Inc. The partnership is intended to help fund the research and development of new diagnostic testing products. Canon BioMedical Inc will focus on working with Spartan on these products, which will include rapid genetic testing. Founded in 2005, Spartan is a portfolio investment of Canadian angel organization Maple Leaf Angels.

MELVILLE, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that it has made a strategic investment in Spartan Bioscience Inc., a leader in on-demand DNA testing, to help fund the research and development of new diagnostic testing products. Canon BioMedical, Inc., the recently established wholly- owned subsidiary of Canon U.S.A., Inc., plans to explore areas to work with Spartan on the development of future diagnostic products, including rapid genetic testing.
