Richard Wolpert knows what it's like to ride business waves as a long-time angel investor and entrepreneur. And as a jet ski enthusiast, Wolpert can tell you a thing or two about ocean waves. In fact, Wolpert, who currently sources deals for Los Angeles-based digital media investor The Mail Room Fund, is out on the waves right now. On June 1, Wolpert took off for a week-long solo WaveRunner adventure in the Bahamas. The trip included an initial 80-mile-long crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from Florida to the Bahamas. And now Wolpert, who turns 47 in August, is jet skiing around the Bahamas before he returns home.
Quietly, Pacific Southwest Ventures has joined the likes of Gridiron Capital, Huntsman Gay Global Capital and HRJ Capital. What the firms all have in common is that they have onetime pro athletes on their rosters. Without any fanfare, placekicker Billy Cundiff, who is currently listed as a free agent, joined Pacific Southwest as an associate […]
There are certain things you can count on from Tim Draper. The tie for one. And chances are good that he’ll break out into song. Specifically, he’ll gladly sing his RiskMaster song, a tribute to entrepreneurship. That’s what Draper did today at the WTIA Fast Pitch Forum in Seattle. You can see the video below. […]
Remember all that chatter earlier this month over how Boston VC is dead? Talk of this came about because Greylock Partners, after operating in the Boston area for more than four decades, announced it plans to relocate its HQ to Silicon Valley and that Partner Don Sullivan will also pack up and move to California. […]
A URL that was getting retweeted earlier this month, at least by me and some of the folks in my Twitter network, was for a game called Pin the VC. The game, as seen on UMapper.com, tests the user’s knowledge of venture firms on storied Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, Calif. Users are given […]
Need a job? Maybe something at a little VC-backed startup? Then you might want to give StartUpHire a try. The National Venture Capital Association today announced today its partnership with the job search engine StartUpHire to collect data on venture-backed job openings nationwide. Launched earlier this year as a service for burgeoning tech companies, The […]
Healy Jones, an associate at Atlas Venture, says that he’s leaving the world of VC to enter the Boston tech scene. Jones joined Atlas in 2007, having previously worked as an associate at Summit Partners. He explains his decision to leave at length in his blog, which he has been sharing with tech entrepreneur Prasad […]
Quietly this morning, Ryan McIntyre, managing director of the Foundry Group, announced that the firm invested in Cloud Engines, maker of the Pogoplug network-attached storage adpater. Details of the financing are scant, but McIntyre confirmed that Foundry is the sole investor in the company's Series A round. The funding amount is undisclosed. Prior to Foundry jumping in, Cloud Engines was angel-backed, he said. Announced at the CES in January, Pogoplug connects a USB hard drive or flash stick to your home computer, allowing you to retrieve files from home while you're on the road. McIntyre talks more about the company in his blog post.
Last month, when Nielsen Online research analyst David Martin reported that a majority of people who sign up for Twitter abandon the site after a month, the Twitter universe got its dander up. After all, Twitter, they say, thrives due to its third-party sites—such as TweetDeck, TwitPic, Twitstat, Hootsuite, EasyTweets, Tumblr, etc. Because of that, the […]
Last month, when Brad Feld, managing director and co-founder of the the Foundry Group said he was going to cook and serve fries at the Spud Bros eatery in Boulder, Colo., I asked if he was kidding. He said it was definitely NOT a joke. Sure enough, Feld worked behind the counter of Spud Bros, which claims to make "Quite Possibly the World's Greatest French Fries," and served up tasty potatoes for two hours. Having Feld as a guest chef raised $500 for a local nonprofit called the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County. This weekend, Spud Bros (with the help of the marketing agency Metzger Associates) posted a video of Feld's culinary techniques. You can see it after the jump, including a reference to Twitter that would make Feld's VC pal Fred Wilson grin.
